Is It really just a number?

allsizesAs you all know I have fell in love with my body again.  It’s such a wonderful feeling to begin to understand your body and what works for it.  The last time I went shopping I spent hours (4 hours to be exact) trying to find the right outfit.  I went through so many different dresses, pants, jeans, shirts, just to become more and more upset as the sizes I chose were getting bigger and bigger.  I wanted to give up but my husband wouldn’t let me.  I took a deep breath and finally found what was the perfect outfit.  I was very pleased.  The next time I went shopping I spent about 2 hours looking for an outfit.  This time I already had an outfit in mind which didn’t involved jeans, a skirt, or pants.  All I needed was some leggings.  Luckily the size on the leggings were one size fits all.  Isn’t that a great size?  Then finally this past saturday I needed to go shopping.  We were celebrating my husband’s fraternity brother’s birthday.  I personally like to look good when going out, but when out with hubby’s friends I try to look extra good.

Well I knew what store I wanted to go into.  I walked around until I found what seem to be the right outfit (I never look for the perfect outfit).  I knew that in this particular store I wore at least a size 11 in jeans, but I was a bit nervous since all the jeans looked like the highest was a size 9.  I just finish eating some lunch (I know a bad thing to do prior to going shopping) so I wasn’t sure if a size 11 would fit.  I grabbed the size 11 and I found a size 13.  Normally I would freak out about these numbers.  You mean to tell me I went from a size 0 right before going to college to a size 13, how big was I really going to allow myself to get.  But because I became content with my body and I’ve been emersing myself in the fashion scene (well what looks good for my shape), the number did not bother me.  I tried on my size 11 jeans and it felt good.  I had a small muffin top, so I tried on the 13’s and was extremely happy.  The size 11’s probably would fit me just fine when my stomach goes down, but I do like to eat when I go out so I just said let me pick up the bigger size.  So I found a good pair of jeans and now it was time for a top.  I have pretty big shoulders and arms so I knew I had to find something that will take away from me looking big and not add to the bulk.  I found the perfect jacket along with the perfect shirt (that hid my post prego tummy).  Then on to some accesories.  I realized accesorize is the key to any outfit, so I’m getting better at it.  All of this in one hour.  I was so happy.  Not to mention the jeans were buy one get the other half off, so I was able to pick up another pair of jeans.  The second jeans turned out to be the perfect jeans to make my perfect outfit.  As you can see I always look for the right outfit, which seems to always turn out to be the perfect outfit.

So I say all this to say, does the number of the jeans really count.  I have learned through out my journey to loving my body that it doesn’t.  We put so much emphasis on the number when the reality of it is that every store, or designer cut there jeans entirely different.  The flirt jeans from Old Navy fit me perfectly in a size 10, while I’m purchasing a 13 from another store.  Does this mean I have gained weight.  Not necessarily.  It just means that the designer size their clothes differently.  Because we give so much meaning to the number in our clothes we tend to feed our insecurity of our weight and size.  Remember it’s just a number.  Find the right style jeans for your body shape, regardless of size and you will feel sexy, smaller, and more confident.  We so often try to squeeze ourselves in the size we want to be and then become unhappy with ourselves because we don’t look good.  I have been there.

Is the size of your jeans playing with your mind?  What steps can you take to find the right jeans for your body type and not your size?

  1. What an awesome post! I agree, the number is just a number. It used to bother me, too, but now I want to be comfortable and happy, no matter what the number says. I don’t pay attention to that number or the scale anymore either. As long as I look and feel good … it’s all good!

  5. Great site that you have here and very inspirational, I love to read motivational content. And yes it really is just a number and the older I get the more I have learned that also, because I have to admit I have been one of those ones to squeeze sometimes 2 sizes smaller just to wear a certain style of jean.

Now I just try to stay healthy and find what works for me.

  6. Numbers don’t mean anything to anyone but us! I used to be a size 2 (sigh) and now hover around being an 8 after having two kids. I remember the first time I went in the store and the 8 didn’t fit and I knew a 10 would. Oooh, it was like slapping me with a Buick!

But then I realized, the numbers are on the inside of clothes for a reason – you’re the only one who knows what size you have on! Because I’m so short – barely 5 feet tall – people often mistake me for being smaller than I am. People would think I’m a 6 anyway, even if I know I’m wearing a 10. Buy what really fits, because then it’s more flattering to your figure and makes you look smaller! Took me forever to figure that out!
