A Sense of Independence
I’m all for our little ones asserting their independence. Learning to play on their own, not needing mommy for every little thing is great. Now that my little man is walking he can go anywhere, and yes he does go everywhere. He’s moving so fast and so well it’s amazing. I’m enjoying watching him develop right before my eyes. This is such an amazing gift that we parents get to see daily. But my question is was he or was he not asserting his independence and when is the right time to do so.
Since Friday I decided to move his playpen into his room so he can learn to be in his own room. Things have been going great. He will only get fussy once through the night and I would go in pat him on the back and he would fall right back to sleep. Well this time around he didn’t go back to sleep. Since I was extremely tired and needed to go to work in the morning I brought him in my bed. Yes I know, I shouldn’t have, but I needed some rest. Well he did end up going back to sleep after tossing and turning for a while. But at 3:30 this morning he wakes up climbs off the bed and opens the door and walks right out of the room. He was wide awake and ready to play. I could not believe it. I was one extremely tired and two surprised that he did that. Was this a form of asserting some sort of independence? If it was, does it have to be at 3:30 in the morning. I made him a bottle and put him back in the bed where he talked and talked and talked and talked, oh did I mention that he talked until he finally fell asleep. At this point I had no clue as to what time it was. What I do know is that I did not hear my alarm clock and made it to work late. Luckily my job understood, but come on. Can we do this later on in the day with daddy (lol), or maybe around 7 pm or something.
What do you think? Was he or was he not asserting his independence? How would you handle that situation?
